Canadian Pastor Arrested for Violating Court Order : What Really Happened

Canadian Pastor Arrest news is trending after a Calgary pastor was taken into custody in a case that has sparked debates about free speech, religious rights, and court authority in Canada. Videos of the arrest on Instagram and Facebook gained millions of views, causing even more confusion about what actually happened.

Here is a clear and simple breakdown of the full story.

Who is the Canadian Pastor?

The pastor involved is Derek Reimer, a Calgary-based pastor known for protesting public events such as drag story hours at libraries.

He has been involved in similar incidents before, and previous court conditions were already in place because of a 2023 legal case.

This latest arrest is connected to those earlier charges – not a brand-new protest.

Why Was the Canadian Pastor Arrested?

On December 4, 2025, Pastor Derek Reimer was arrested in Calgary for violating a court order.

What led to the arrest?

In 2023, Reimer was convicted of criminal harassment after confronting a librarian during a drag story–hour event.

The court required him to:

• follow specific conduct rules
• stay away from certain events
• write an apology letter to the librarian involved

Why the arrest happened in 2025:

• Reimer refused to write the court-ordered apology letter.
• This refusal meant he violated his Conditional Sentence Order (CSO) – a legal agreement that allowed him to serve his sentence in the community instead of jail.

Because of this violation, police were legally required to arrest him.

Why the Arrest Video Went Viral

Videos from Instagram and Facebook show police approaching Reimer, placing him in handcuffs, and taking him into custody.

Viewers around the world shared the video with captions like:

• Pastor arrested for free speech in Canada
• No freedom of expression in Canada

However, these captions don’t tell the full story.

The arrest wasn’t about preaching – it was about violating a court order tied to a past harassment conviction.

What Are the Actual Legal Issues?

Here is what the law says in this case:

Past conviction

Reimer was found guilty of criminal harassment for aggressively confronting and filming a librarian during a public event.

Current arrest

He was arrested for not following the conditions of his sentence – specifically, refusing to write an apology.

What happens next

Reimer may now:

• face time in jail
• have his community-based sentence revoked
• receive new conditions or penalties depending on the judge’s ruling

The case is ongoing.

What We Know for Sure (Verified Facts)

• The pastor was legally required to write an apology letter
• He refused, violating his sentence conditions
• Police arrested him for that violation
• This is connected to a 2023 criminal harassment case, not a new protest or sermon
• The videos online show the arrest but lack context
• Reimer is awaiting further court hearings to determine the next steps
