In 2015, he became the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils men’s basketball and led the program for more than a decade.

Why Bobby Hurley Fired Started Trending

The keyword started trending after Arizona State announced that Hurley would not return as head coach.

This decision came at the end of the 2025–26 season, especially after a difficult finish and a heavy loss in the conference tournament. As a result, many fans described the situation as him being fired.

Was Bobby Hurley Fired?

The simple answer is Yes, but technically it was a contract decision.

Here’s what happened:

• The university decided not to renew his contract
• He will not continue as head coach next season
• His time with the team officially ends after 11 years

So while it may not be called a direct firing, the result is the same – he is no longer the coach.

Why Did Arizona State Move On?

Several reasons led to this decision:

Team Performance

The team had an average season and struggled in conference games. Expectations were higher, especially after moving into a strong conference.

Tournament Struggles

The season ended with a heavy loss in the conference tournament, which increased pressure on the program to make changes.

Long-Term Expectations

During his time as coach:

• The team reached the NCAA Tournament a few times
• But it did not make deep runs

Over time, the university wanted better results.

Bobby Hurley’s Time at Arizona State

Even though his tenure has ended, Hurley had some notable achievements:

• Coached the team for 11 seasons
• Became one of the program’s most successful coaches

Coaching changes like this are common in college basketball.
