Was Ashley Klein Fired from the NRL? | Latest Update

The question Was Ashley Klein fired? has been trending among NRL fans. The well-known referee has faced a storm of criticism in 2025, leading many to believe he was sacked. But has Ashley Klein really been fired, or was he just removed from certain matches? Here’s the latest update in simple terms.

Who is Ashley Klein?

Ashley Klein is one of the most experienced referees in the National Rugby League (NRL). He has officiated in the competition since 2009 and has refereed big matches, including multiple NRL Grand Finals.

Despite his long career, he has often been at the center of controversy because of decisions that upset both players and fans.

Was Ashley Klein Fired?

No, Ashley Klein has not been fired from the NRL. However, he has been dropped from refereeing the 2025 NRL Grand Final. Instead of being the on-field referee, he will now work in the Bunker role, helping review decisions from behind the scenes.

So while headlines about Ashley Klein fired are trending, the truth is that he was reassigned, not fully removed from refereeing.

Why Was He Removed from the Grand Final?

There are several reasons reported by media outlets:

• Klein handed out 18 penalties in a recent preliminary final, which many thought ruined the flow of the game.
• Earlier in the season, the NRL admitted that one of his calls involving Reece Walsh was wrong, adding to fan frustration.
• Critics, including former players, said his performance was inconsistent and not strong enough for a Grand Final.

Because of this, NRL officials decided to give the big match to another referee, Grant Atkins.

What’s Next for Ashley Klein?

Ashley Klein still remains part of the NRL refereeing group. For now, he will not be leading the Grand Final but will continue working in the Bunker system. Whether he returns to high-profile matches in the future depends on how he performs and if the NRL restores confidence in his abilities.

Conclusion

The talk of Ashley Klein fired is not completely accurate. He hasn’t been fired but has been dropped from the Grand Final referee role and moved to a supporting position. This shows that while his career is not over, his place in the spotlight is under serious pressure.
