What Are People Saying?

Recently, news and social media posts have shown pictures and videos of huge rats found in homes, parks, and bins across the UK. Some reports say these rats are 22 inches long or more – almost the size of a small cat.

One of the most talked-about stories came from North Yorkshire, where pest control experts found a rat over 22 inches long (from nose to tail). People are calling these “super rats”.

What Experts Say

Let’s break it down:

• Yes, rats in the UK can grow big – up to 20 – 22 inches including their tail.
• But many viral pictures look bigger than they really are. This is usually because of camera tricks, like forced perspective.
• Experts say there are no known rats in the UK that grow to 4 feet long or weigh 25 pounds – that would be the size of a medium dog!

Why Photos May Be Misleading

Some viral photos make rats look huge by:

• Placing the rat closer to the camera
• Stretching the tail for size
• Using objects in the background to trick the eye

In many cases, these are normal large rats, not monsters.

Are Giant Rats Dangerous?

Yes, Even if they’re not “monster-sized,” large rats can be dangerous. They can:

• Spread diseases like leptospirosis and salmonella
• Chew through wires, causing fires
• Infest homes and buildings

If you see signs of large rats near your home, it is best to call a pest control expert.
